The early stages of most oral health problems are painless, which is exactly why they progress. By the time something hurts, the inexpensive window has usually closed.

This check takes about a minute in front of a mirror with good light. Do it tonight.

One: gum colour and edge

Healthy gum tissue is firm and pale pink, and it hugs the tooth in a thin, scalloped edge. Tissue that looks red, puffy, or rounded at the edge is inflamed.

Compare left to right and upper to lower. Asymmetry is often easier to notice than an overall change.

Two: bleeding when you brush or floss

Gums that bleed are not normal, and they are not a sign you brushed too hard. Bleeding is the standard clinical indicator of inflammation.

The good news is that at the earliest stage this is genuinely reversible with better daily cleaning, usually within a couple of weeks.
